Retreat! (Part One: in which we eat a lot)

Our new little Perth Modern Quilt group has been talking about having a retreat. As my dog-sitting credits are pretty much taken up for the year, I suggested we take over my parents’ place while they were away on holiday and have a mini-break.

My parents live in a seaside settlement north of Perth, in rather a large house. They often suggest I go and stay for a weekend when they are away. This time I took them up on the offer, and kinda invited 5 friends from the Perth Modern Quilt Guild to go with me… It felt a bit like a teenage house party, with sewing machines instead of boys. And much more sophisticated fare.

Somebody (it might have been me) suggested that the two American girls do breakfast. As McKenna said, NO ONE does breakfast better than Americans. They did their patriotic duty and did you all proud. Look at these cinnamon buns!

There was a little bit of a civil war in the kitchen over the corned beef hash, between New York and Arkansas, but all was sweet in the end.

McKenna actually found American bacon in Perth, so we had a happy Yankee. Pancakes, hash browns and real maple syrup rounded off the menu on day one.

We do believe in a healthy balanced meal to start the day!

We skipped lunch after our marathon brunch, and headed to the Yanchep Inn which is in the national park, where a Christmas in July dinner was in full swing. There were kangaroos on the front lawn, so there was no question of being in Kansas any more.

The quilt dogs accompanied us, of course, and found plenty of new fans to worship them, laps to sit on and quilts to walk on. I believe some American bacon also found its way under the table. Melody DID break into Janine’s bag and eat six cod liver oil tablets and open a bag of flour (white powder – drug problem dog?). No ill effects fortunately.

We were thoroughly spoiled by a little treat McKenna brought along.
